Robert J. MacDonald
84, of Narragansett, passed away on Friday January 11, 2019 at Sunnyview Nursing Home, Warwick. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn (Teed) MacDonald.
Born in Providence he was the son of the late John “Joe” and Estelle (McGovern) MacDonald.
Robert graduated from URI with a bachelor's degree in finance in 1955. He earned his MBA in 1969 from URI.
He had a full career working in the financial industry in various positions including controller and Vice President of Charlton Memorial Hospital and then AMRESCO. In his retirement he worked at H & R Block during tax season then went to his "fun" job at the Newport Preservation Society as a tour guide at the mansions.
He had 28 years of active service in the U.S. Army Reserve retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
He was very active as a URI Alumni and in community service. He served as treasurer and president of the board for Prout School in South Kingstown and was treasurer of the board of Bayside Community Health Center in North Kingstown. He received the URI Ram award in 1980 and was inducted into the URI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. He received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Fall River Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and received the 100% Presidents Award from the Lions International in 1987 for his service to the Lions Club of Fall River.
Robert was an active member of St. Thomas More Parish in Narragansett, and served as lecter and eucharistic minister.
He enjoyed getting together with friends, traveling with his wife, music especially Neil Diamond, watching the Red Sox, golfing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of 62 years , his 7 children Kathleen Bouchard and her husband Ray of Venice, FL, Carol Hogg and her husband Bill of Johnston, RI, Karen MacDonald of Cranston, RI, Jane Cinque and her husband John of Kings Park, NY, Janice Beaudry and her husband Mike of Warwick, RI, AnnMarie Borden and her husband Mike of East Taunton, MA, and Bob MacDonald of Wakefield, RI.
He has 12 grandchildren Christine Bouchard, Stephen Pratt, Michael Pratt, Dana Cinque, Jackie Cinque, Lex Cinque, Nicole Beaudry, Michael Beaudry, Josh Borden, Alyssa Borden, Silas MacDonald, and Tess MacDonald. He also has 4 great grandchildren Angelina Pratt, Alex Pratt, Anthony Pratt and Arianna Pratt.
He was also the brother of the late Patricia Mallon.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9 am from the Nardolillo Funeral Home SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL 1111 Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Thomas More Church, Narragansett. Burial with military honors will take place in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. VISITING HOURS: Monday 5-8 pm.
