On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, David, a loving son, brother, and uncle, passed away at age 56.
David was born in Providence, RI to William and Marguerite (Topalian) Griego. He received his Sc.B. in Mathematics from Brown University and taught legal math for many years to pre-law students at Princeton Review. David was head of the Math Department of the Squared School in Providence, a school for gifted math prodigies.
David showed early academic prowess and was a long-time member of Mensa and Intertel. Alongside his intellectual accomplishments, David was a gifted athlete and musician. David played basketball and Varsity Baseball at Moses Brown and was an avid New York Yankees fan. David was a highly talented flute player, studying under John Curran. He was also a chess prodigy, winning numerous state and national titles while in his teens, including New England Co-Champion. At one point, David ranked third in the U.S. in the 18-and-under category and was a National Master at age 15. With a record of 44-0 during his time at Moses Brown School, he led the team to three Rhode Island High School crowns. David earned the title of FIDE Master and held the standard rating of 2355. Alongside his many achievements, David was a life-long member of Sts. Sahag & Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church, teaching and serving as Superintendent for the Sunday School, and serving on the Parish Council. Most of all, David was known for his witty intelligence, his profound faith, and his love for his family and friends.
David is survived by his father and mother, his sister and her two sons.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, January 10th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Sts. Sahag & Mesrob Church, (social distancing and masks required), with a funeral service on Monday, January 11th at 11 a.m. Burial at Swan Point Cemetery will be private.
