ZAVEN V. "ZEKE" TENKARIAN, of Cranston, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2007 at home.
Born in Providence, he was the beloved son of the late Zaven and Agnes (Vartanian) Tenkarian.
Upon graduating from Hope High School, Mr. Tenkarian served as an electronics technician in the U.S.A.F., stationed at Soesterberg, The Netherlands. After completing his military service, he was employed as a Field Engineer with Raytheon, and later joined Sikorsky Aircraft, to develop the first high speed Turbo Train. Subsequently he was recruited by Amtrak, where he worked until retirement last year.
He was an avid Ham radio operator and builder, who earned his first license as a teenager in 1956. He was a lifetime member of the Providence Radio Assoc., known world-wide by his call sign W1IUX. Mr. Tenkarian served as both President and Secretary and later manager of the Association's station, W1OP, in Johnston.
After retiring from a near forty year career at Amtrak, he pursued his love for wooden boats and was passionately restoring his beloved Herreshoff sloop "Wings", which he expected to launch spring 2008.
His sincerity, generosity and passion will be missed by all.
He was the dear brother of Mariam T. Dolan of Cranston, Sona V. Boyajian and her husband George of Warwick, Avedis Z. Tenkarian of Hopkinton and Armen D. Tenkarian and his wife Martha of Seekonk, MA, and uncle of many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service Friday at 10:00 a.m. in Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, 402 Broadway, Providence, and may call at the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston on Thursday 5-8 p.m.
Burial with Military Honors will be in North Burial Ground Cemetery, Providence.
