William R. McVey, Sr., (Ret. Battalion Chief, P.F.D.) passed away Tuesday peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Dorothy S. (Hannon) McVey. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late William M. and Marion (Richard) McVey. He was a United States Coast Guard Veteran serving in WW-II. Mr. McVey joined the Providence Fire Department in May of 1949 and was assigned to the fire alarm division and on May 23, 1965 Bill was promoted to assistant Superintendent of Fire Alarm with the rank of Battalion Chief, retiring in May of 1974. Upon retirement Bill was appointed Deputy Fire Marshall in the State Fire Marshal's Office as Chief of Special Services. Bill was appointed by Governor Frank Licht in 1972 to the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code Commission representing the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs and in 1973 Governor Noel appointed him to a commission to rewrite the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code. He was a member of the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Club, Providence Permanent Fireman's Relief Association, N.E. Section I.M.S.A., Honorary Member of Local 799 I.A.F.F., R.I. Fire Safety Association, Shamrock Society of North Providence and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the R.I. Fire Alarm Superintendents. Besides his wife he is survived by his loving children, William R. McVey Jr. and his wife Nicole of Charlestown, Robert C. McVey and his wife Claudia of So. Kingstown, Debra L. Tully and her husband Floyd of Charlestown, Timothy R. McVey of Middletown and Thomas E. McVey and his wife Ellen of Charlestown. He was the brother of Marilyn Schmidt of Florida and Joan Murphy of Vermont. Mr. McVey was the loving grandfather of eleven and loving great-grandfather of three. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from the Nardolillo Funeral Home SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt.1A), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Christ the King Church,180 Old North Rd., Kingstown, R.I. at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in R.I.
