a spirited and deeply loved man from Sarasota, FL, formerly of East Greenwich, RI, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his devoted family, on August 25, 2024, at the age of 75. Born to the late Joseph G. Formicola Sr. and Eva (Vespia) Formicola, Bill lived a full life rich with love, laughter, and a steadfast commitment to helping others.
Bill’s greatest joy was his family, especially his daughters, Talia, and Sydney Formicola. They were the absolute center of his world and the loves of his life. He adored them beyond measure, taking immense pride in their accomplishments and the beautiful women they have become. His family life, peppered with moments of shared laughter, music, and love, was his greatest treasure. His daughters and family were not just a part of his life-they were his everything.
Bill is also survived by his beloved brother, Joseph G. Formicola Jr. of Narragansett and Miami Beach, FL., his sister, Stella Fitzsimmons, along with her husband, Joseph, of Narragansett, his niece, Ashley Fitzsimmons Hawkins, and her husband, Brandon, of Charlestown, as well as his nephew and godchild, Christopher Fitzsimmons of Narragansett, and Sydney’s fiancé, Anthony Ottone, who all held a special place in his heart. Bill is further survived by his former wife and the mother of his daughters, Lesly Vecchio, of Lincoln.
Bill’s academic and professional achievements were vast, but his heart was always focused on helping others. A graduate of Roger Williams University, with a degree in Business Administration, he went on to pursue graduate studies in Public Administration at the University of Rhode Island. Throughout his remarkable 46-year career, he was a beacon of hope for the underprivileged, dedicating his life to creating opportunities for disadvantaged youths and adults. He mentored countless young people, many of whom went on to become influential leaders. His final role as the Rhode Island state director for the federal GEAR UP initiative, along with his position as Senior Vice President for the College Crusade of Rhode Island, capped a career filled with heartfelt passion. Bill’s legacy continues through the lives of thousands of Rhode Island students who benefited from his dedication, and the GEAR UP program remains a testament to his tireless efforts in helping low-income students achieve their dreams of higher education.
His former ownership of Saturn’s Rings Arcade in Providence and the Seagull Restaurant in East Matunuck, further illustrate his entrepreneurial spirit and diverse interests. He was also an avid reader, a fitness enthusiast, and a loyal friend to many. Whether enjoying a drink and listening to music at one of his favorite watering holes or engaging in meaningful conversations, Bill had a way of bringing warmth and wit to every gathering. His sharp sense of humor, and kind, compassionate soul will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His generous heart, vibrant spirit, and lifelong dedication to his loved ones and his community will forever be remembered.
In honor of Bill’s life, relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church in Narragansett. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
