87, of Providence, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Coccio) De Vecchis whom he married in Rome, Italy April 21, 1949. Born in Capistrello, Italy, on February 6, 1924, he was a son of the late Gennaro and Domenica (Croce) De Vecchis. Mr. De Vecchis was a machinist and instructor for Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Company of North Kingstown for thirty-seven years. He was an Italian and French radio broadcaster on WRIB, Warwick for twenty-five years. Virgilio was the co-founder of the RI Italian American Historical Society, and member of the Festa Italiana Society, the Verrazano Committee, the National Italian American Foundation of NYC, and various Sons of Italy Lodges. He was awarded the title of Caviliere of the Italian American Legion of Merit.
He is survived by his loving son, David A. De Vecchis of Providence. Virgilio was the father of the late Rose D. Bugli. He was the cherished grandfather of Pietro Bugli of Providence and Sabrina D. Conroy and her husband Jonathan of Providence. He was the brother of Gino De Vecchis of East Providence, Olivio De Vecchis of Avezzano, Italy, Aleandro De Vecchis of Avignon, France, Tiziano De Vecchis of Sidney, Australia, and the late Ines Tomei, Angela, Leonida, Mario, Mario, Marcello and Aleandro De Vecchis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 1525 Cranston Street, Cranston. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS Wednesday 4-8 p.m. in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston.
