78, of Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett died on Friday Nov. 2, 2007 at South County Hospital, Wakefield. He was the husband of Mary F. " Murph " ( Ollis ) Carmody. He was born in Pittsburg, PA a son of the late Thomas and Blanche ( Shields ) Carmody and he had resided in Narragansett since 1968. Living by his oft-quoted credo " Loyalty, Effort and Enthusiasm", as an educator, coach, administrator, mentor, friend, and athletic advocate, Tom Carmody's illustrious career spanned over a half century of achievement and success. After a coaching career that took him from Bethel Park High School in his native Pittsburg, to Penn State, Duke, and U.R.I., Tom began his association with Johnson & Wales in the seventies. Through the nineties, he was an integral part of the Department of Admissions for the School of Technology. Then in 1998, he was asked to assist in the administration of a department near and dear to his heart-intercollegiate athletics. From 1999-2002, Tom oversaw the rapid growth and astounding development of the Johnson & Wales athletic program. In three short years as the director of athletics, Tom instilled professionalism and vision, providing leadership and an uncanny sense of direction. Armed with many a story, the most firm of handshakes, an astute knowledge of collegiate sports, and an engaging personality, he helped to vault Wildcat athletics to new heights at the start of the new millennium. He was a naval veteran of the Korean War and former chairman of the R.I. Higher Education Assistance Authority for more than 10 years. Beside his wife he is survived by his children; Kelly Perry and her husband Brian of Cumming, GA and Michael Carmody and his wife Carina of Wakefield. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and was the brother of the late James Carmody. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday 2-6pm at the Christian Brothers Center, " Chapel of Our Lady of the Star ", 635 Ocean Rd., Narragansett followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10:am in the Chapel. Burial with military honors will take place in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ocean Tides School at the Christian Brothers Center.
