Retired U.S. Army Special Forces Captain Sam Sirypannho, 80, of Woonsocket, peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 5, 2024. Sam was born in Xiagnbouli, Laos, to his late parents, Khampane Chantamaly and Thitbouasy Sirypannho. Sam is survived by his loving wife, Chanhom; their sons, Charouath (Gvear) and Bomby; daughter, Addy; daughters from previous marriages, Somchit, Sammy, Theap, Thouk, and Thoon; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Sam Sirypannho led an extraordinary life filled with bravery and dedication. He served his country with honor and valor, beginning on May 10, 1964, when the CIA recruited him for Surrogate Warfare. Sam underwent rigorous training and became part of the US Army Special Guerilla unit under the CIA and Surrogate Warfare US Special Forces Commander. Throughout his military service from 1964 to 1975, he undertook over 200 combat missions across Military Regions 1, 2, and 5 in Laos. He demonstrated unwavering courage as he worked behind enemy lines along the Ho Chi Minh trail and engaged in heavy battles against North Vietnamese divisions.
Despite facing immense challenges, including being captured by Lao communist forces in July 1975 and enduring six years and six months in a POW camp before successfully escaping in 1982, Sam never lost his spirit. His journey eventually led him to the United States on November 23rd, 1983.
Sam Sirypannho's remarkable contributions were recognized with several honors, including the Vietnam War Service Medal and Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Ribbon, National Defense Campaign Commemorative, Special Operations and Combat Service Commemorative.
Visitations will be held on Friday, July 12th, at Nardolillo Funeral Home & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service on Saturday, July 13th, from 8:00-11:00 a.m. at the exact location. Burial is kindly omitted.
