Salvatore (Sal) Castaldi passed away at his home in Johnston, Rhode Island on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Born in Providence, Sal was the son of the late Raffaele and Adelina (Appolonio) Castaldi. He was the beloved husband of Theresa (Colaluca) Castaldi. They were married at Holy Cross Church on February 3, 1951.
Sal and Terry owned and operated the Square Fruit Market in Providence for over 40 years. The business was a popular market for people to visit and to purchase their produce and home grown hybrid plants.
Sal was an avid landscaper, growing his own produce and creating gardens in his yard that would cause passersby to stop and enjoy the view. He cultivated zinnias colored scarlet to saffron, and next to the blue hydrangeas, his garden mirrored the summer sunset in an evening sky. He spent hours in his vegetable garden, growing a variety of high quality vegetables.
Sal could often be found riding his tractors through the yard, polishing his Cadillac or admiring his extensive model car collection. He enjoyed traveling with his wife. The two would take cruises to many countries throughout the world. He liked bowling and playing golf, and watching the Patriots.
Sal was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Scalabrini Council 3547. He was a proud Fourth Degree Knight and assisted with many fundraisers to benefit both the Knights and his parish, Holy Cross Church. Sal was the head usher at Holy Cross and participated in many church activities.
He was the loving father of Gail Forand and her husband, Robert Sr. of North Scituate, Joan McKeon and her husband, Andrew of Johnston and Karyn Castaldi of Johnston. He was the cherished grandfather of Melynda, Lisa, Robert Jr., Andrew III and Ryan. He was the honored great-grandfather of Dylan, Matthew and Kassidy. He was the brother of the late Agnes, Dora, Leah, Nicholas, Carmine, Joseph and Fred Castaldi. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Margaret (Colaluca) Handy and her husband, Edward of Cambridge, MA.
Visiting hours will take place on Wednesday, January 23rd from 5 – 7 pm at Nardolillo Funeral Home, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston. Funeral from the Nardolillo Funeral Home at 9 am Thursday, January 24th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 118 King Phillip St., Providence., at 10am. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Knights of Columbus 3547, 966 Plainfield St., Johnston, RI 02919, are welcome.
