Robert L. Noddin of Osterville, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, Massachusetts on November 17, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born October 16, 1930, son of William and Thelma Noddin. He attended public schools from 1945-1949 in Lincoln, Maine, elected president of his high school class each year, graduating in 1949 from Mattanawcook Academy, receiving the American Legion award for outstanding youth leadership.
In 1949 he was awarded a NROTC scholarship to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he majored in Economics. Graduating in 1954, simultaneously commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S.Navy and immediately assigned to the USS New Jersey, flagship of the 7th Fleet based in Yokosuka, Japan and participated in the last naval engagement prior to the signing of the ceasefire.
He was transferred to Officers Advanced Academy at the Anacostia Naval Air Station in Washington, D.C. While at the school, he married his fiancée Virginia Lee of Cranston, Rhode Island. The two of them often joked that Virginia took her textbooks on their brief honeymoon in order to study for final exams prior to her graduation from Pembroke College at Brown University.
Upon Roberts’s graduation he was assigned as a Line Officer to the USS Antietam based in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. While with the Antietam he participated in a major deployment of the 6th Fleet to the Mediterranean. Prior to the Antietam he participated as a midshipman in a number of cruises including as diverse as Bergan Norway, the Azores, Panama Canal, Naples, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Algiers, Hong Kong, China, Haiti, Bermuda and Hawaii.
In Mid 1956 he was released from the Navy and transferred to Naval Reserves. He joined JP Morgan as a financial analyst. In 1961 he joined J & W Seligman, an old line investment money banking establishment as a senior Utility Analyst. During his years at Seligman he advanced to the ranks of VP and Chief Planning Officer at which point he oversaw the establishment of one of the country’s first money market funds. He became the Senior VP of the parent company and VP of J & W Ventures a wholly owned subsidiary.
In 1982 he left New York for Boston and joined a smaller Venture Capital firm and in 1992 he and his wife, Virginia, settled on the Cape in Osterville, and he continued providing pro bono services to emerging companies.
During his years at Seligman and Boston, Robert was an accredited financial expert, qualified to testify on financial matters before several state regulatory offices in NY, MA, NC, SC and Florida and before the Federal Gov. He was also a featured speaker at financial conferences and conventions held throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Robert and his wife of 54 years travelled extensively throughout New England and particularly their beloved coast of Maine along the mid coast area of East Boothbay Harbor and what they regarded as the “real Maine”, the coastline extending from Bar Harbor to Quebec. They were particularly fond of the Canadian Maritime Province of Quebec, the Gaspe’ Peninsula, Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail.
In addition to his BA from Brown University, Robert held a Masters (MBA) with distinction in Finance and Investments from New York University School of Business Administration. Registered NASD General Securities Principal, registered NASD Financial and Operations Principal, Fellow at Financial Analyst Federation member of International Association of Financial Planners, former member of both NY Society of Securities Analysts and the Boston Security Analysts Society. Locally he was a member of the Osterville Men’s Club, Osterville Village Association, Tales of Cape Cod, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Officers of America, and Pulmonary Hypertension Assoc.
He is survived by his son, Kevin Noddin of Nantucket, MA; his two daughters, Katherine Wieland of Sturbridge, MA. and Mary Ann Noddin-Poulin of Osterville, MA.: his grandchildren Patrick Noddin and his wife Olessya of Nantucket, MA, Christine Jenkins of Sturbridge, MA, Carolyn Wieland of Sturbridge, MA, LCDR Andrew Poulin and his wife LT Kalen of San Diego, Gregory Poulin of San Francisco, 2nd LT Stephen Poulin of Fort Benning, GA, LT Katherine Poulin of Washington, DC, SPC Brooks Poulin of Boston; and his great grandchildren, Sasha Noddin, Connor Wieland, Cadence Jenkins, Leila Noddin and Jackson Poulin and his sister, Janet Edwards and her son, Bill Edwards of New Hampshire.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a service with military honors, Saturday November 30, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Ann’s Chapel, Cranston, Rhode Island, followed by interment in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
