Robert C. McCauley

of Methuen, MA and Point Judith, RI died peacefully on September 2nd, two days after his 82nd birthday, with the love of his life, his wife Susan, at his side. Bob, who was also known as "Uncle B!", was virtually surrounded by the presence and love held for him by well over 50 of his nieces and nephews in both his and Susan's families! He was truly a "Great-Uncle" to all!

Bob was born in South Providence, RI on Aug. 31st, 1940 as the youngest child of John and Helen McCauley. From an early age,  Bob had a lifelong love of working with his hands and with tools, and he loved taking things apart and "fixing" them --at times to his mother's chagrin! He grew up across the street from Roger Williams Park in South Providence, his days were filled with activities and sports. Bob attended St. Michael's School and later Hope High School where he played and starred in football and baseball. Bob was an absolute standout at baseball -- a dominating pitcher, great hitter and fielder. Throwing 18-20 strikeouts per game was not unusual for Bob. He was drafted and signed by the Detroit Tigers as a first baseman right out of high school and he spent several seasons with them until his career was cut short with a knee injury. With his pro baseball career finished, Bob returned to his love of building and he began a career in construction work that spanned residential and commercial real estate development.

Bob started a construction company in North Conway, NH building single family homes and commercial buildings.  He then expanded into construction of single family communities and larger commercial real estate/condominium projects in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.  His work ethic and dedication to his trade earned him the respect of all those who worked with him and resulted in being hired to oversee the construction and redevelopment of many buildings in the Boston area. Bob also took up skiing becoming a member of the Mt. Cranmore Ski Patrol in North Conway NH. It was in these travels that Bob met Susan and they shared the next 38 years together. Bob would be quick to tell you, they were the greatest and happiest years of his life.

Bob kept his Rhode Island roots and friendships alive through a lifelong circle of friends, many of whom grew up with him in the same neighborhood in South Providence playing baseball! In addition to Methuen, Bob settled in Point Judith, where he designed and built his own home right on the ocean. He was a member of the Point Judith Yacht Club even serving one term as Commodore! His skills at solving mechanical, engineering and structural problems were unmatched and he would make them available to anyone in need. He even translated these skills into mastering aviation, woodcrafts and his own family genealogy! With Bob, family came first - he loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. A great listener, his advice was notably grounded in love and great clarity. His devotion as a friend and his personal integrity were exemplary. Everything he designed or built was high quality and always at the best value!

In addition to Bob's beloved Susan, and his nieces' and nephews' respective families, Bob is survived by his daughter, Deborah McCauley Ottomano (Donald) of Seattle WA and her two daughters, Taylor Marie Etzel (Justin) of Eugene, OR and Meghan Helen Ottomano of Orlando, FL. He was predeceased by his son, Michael and his daughter, Kimberly. Bob is also survived by  Michael's daughter, Rebecca Lynn Mele of Sharon, MA and Bob's sister, Mary Sabjen (Miklos) of Chico, CA.
