102, of Narragansett, passed away on Sunday, September 4 at home with his family by his side. Born on September 26, 1919 in Providence, Philip was the second son of the late Frank and Theresa Monte. He was the brother of the late Louis Monte (Helena). He was a devoted husband and father. Philip was married to Norma Monte (Ursillo, dec.) for 73 years. They had five children: Marsha Beach (Paul, dec.) of Charleston, SC, Frank Monte (Gloria) of South Kingstown, Mary Camire (Roger, dec.) of Narragansett, Phyllis Palizza (Len) of Cranston, and Christine Gilmartin also of Cranston.
He was the proud grandfather of twelve: Monica Manzi (Michael), Frank Philip Monte (Elizabeth), Philip Monte (Melissa), Charles Beach, William Beach (dec.), Teresa Beach, Stephen Beach (Juliana), Leonard Palizza III (Valentina), Christopher Palizza, Katherine Johnson (Michael), Andrew Gilmartin (Alyssa) and Timothy Gilmartin. He was also blessed with nieces, nephews, and eleven great-grandchildren,
After graduating from the University of Rhode Island in Agricultural Economics, Philip served in the United States Navy for three years during World War II. He was an avid big-band musician on the trumpet, and led several orchestras from his junior high days, throughout college and even in his time in the Navy when he was stationed at Chelsea (MA) Naval Hospital.
As a graduate of St. Louis University’s dental school in 1950, Dr. Monte practiced dentistry in Providence for over 40 years, served as President of the Rhode Island Dental Association, and volunteered his services at Samuel’s Dental Clinic.
Philip was an active member of St. Matthews parish in Cranston, where he served as a lector, an avid vegetable gardener, an enthusiastic tennis player well into his nineties, and a man who valued his many friends over the years. But most of all, he was a family man.
His funeral will be held Friday, September 9, 2022 at 9am from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road, (Rt. 1A), Narragansett followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 1130 Ten Rod Rd, Ste. A205, North Kingstown, RI 02852.
