Olga M. Hurd, 97, of Cranston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2023. Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late Lisco and Marianna (Vitolo) Santurri. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard S. Hurd, Jr.
Olga was from the greatest generation. She was a first generation American born to parents that came over from Italy. Growing up during the Great Depression, her first family home was on Mica Avenue in the Silver Lake section before moving to Caporal Street in Cranston. She was a graduate of Cranston High School. She was a true tomboy; her athletic abilities started from a very young age in softball and basketball.
After graduation she attended a party in Newport where she met the bartender Howie, who would later become her beloved husband. Howie and Olga welcomed their sons in their Warwick home, and then in 1964 moved to the Oaklawn section of Cranston, where she remained. The family joined the Greenwich Swim Club, paving the way for many lifelong friendships. Several of these families had built homes in New Hampshire, along with a log cabin built by Olga, Howie and sons with their own hands. The cabin was the center of memories with family gatherings and skiing. She made many close friends in her years working at the Cranston Adult Learning Center. Later in Olga’s life she had the opportunity to travel with friends to many countries including South Africa, Russia, Portugal, Japan, Germany, Italy, France and countries along the Danube.
Olga is survived by her two beloved sons Howard S. Hurd, III and wife Sandra and David A. Hurd and wife Cathy. She was the devoted sister and sister-in-law to the late Ricky Iascone and husband Peter. She was the loving grandmother of Kathryn Ness and husband Geoff, Stephanie Hurd and partner Curtis Morris, the late Michael Bowen, Sarah Harwood and husband James, and Jennifer Dunn and husband Matthew. She was the cherished great-grandmother of Anthony Hurd and wife Savannah, Michaela Harwood and partner Jayden Bonner, Morgan Rose Harwood, Adelynn Dunn, and William Ness.
