d. January 25, 2020

Maureen A (McCaughey) O’Brien

of Cranston and Bonnet Shores, Narragansett, passed away peacefully at Brentwood By the Bay in Warwick on January 25, 2020.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Leo A. and M. Sophia (Barthelmes) McCaughey.  Maureen was the proud wife of 45 years to the late Joseph E. O’Brien.  She was the loving mother to two daughters Joanne O’Brien & (late) Barney Kiernan, and  Mary (O’Brien) & Peter F. Parrella III all of Cranston; grandmother to Leigh-Anne Carvalho, John J. Carvalho Jr, Ryan J. O’Brien and Peter F. Parrella IV; great-grandmother to Cayden & Ryleigh.  She was the sister-in law of Louise (Monk) O’Brien the late Mary (O’Brien) Barry.  She leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mother of the late Patrick O’Brien (at birth) and the late (13 y/o) Mark G. O’Brien. She was predeceased by her brother Leo A. McCaughey Jr., becoming an only child at such a young age, Maureen has very fond memories with her cousin, the late Wilhelmina (McVey) Pistacchio.
Maureen was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy ’50  and Regis College ’54 in Weston, MA. Maureen taught Home Economics at Smithfield High School where she met her husband teaching English & History across the hall.  They were married in St. Augustine’s church in Providence in 1959, making their home in Cranston, later flying south for the winter in Winter Haven, FL while enjoying summers at “Bonnet Point”.
Maureen continued her love of Home Economics making hundreds of Afghans, Sewing and baking goodies for her family.  She enjoyed fishing with Ole’Joe and her road trips to/from Florida.  In the early 80’s she went back to work for her father at the family business, (formerly A. Saugy Inc.), and was adviser to Saugy Inc. until her diagnosis with Dementia.
We’d like to thank the entire staff at Brentwood By The Bay for the support and comfort you provided our Mom over the last 5 months.  Maureen enjoyed sitting by her window overlooking the Narragansett Bay, just like summers past, in Bonnet Shores. I would be remised not to also thank Brookdale Centre of New England where she made her home for 36 months prior to Brentwood.

Her visiting hours will be held on on Thursday morning from 8-10 am in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory 1278 Park Ave. , Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Cranston.  Burial will take place in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston.
