MATILDA (LIBERATI) TANZI, 87, of Blackstone Blvd., Providence, formerly of Vale Ave., Cranston, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 13, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank Tanzi for 44 years. Born in Providence on February 27, 1922, she was the loving daughter of the late Peter and Virginia (Poretta) Liberati.
Matilda was blessed with a keen mind. A "Renaissance woman," her fervent intellectual curiosity began at a young age. Her honors include the Anthony Medal for Excellence in English at Bridgham Jr. High and "Summa Cum Laude" from Classical High School. In 1944 she graduated with an Ed.B. from Rhode Island College of Education where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and was listed in "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." She graduated with an Ed.M. from Boston University in 1952 and a M.A. in Library Science from URI in 1972. She was a devoted educator for 25 years. Her service to children and the community included being an elementary school teacher and principal of two schools in Warwick and a school librarian in Providence. She attended classes at the Brown Learning Community, RISD, and Hamilton House.
Matilda's many interests included reading, history, geography, cooking, travel, foreign language, opera, painting, photography, and sewing. She was feisty and independent, creative, compassionate, and generous. Her humor and wit brought delight to many. She appreciated aesthetic beauty in nature, art, music, and literature and dressed fashionably. She was said to have "the spirit of a newborn" and experienced true "joie de vivre." Her sparkle added sparkle to many lives!
Matilda was the devoted mother of Elizabeth Farynyk and her husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; Anne Tanzi Carty and her husband Philip of Tiverton; and the late Joseph P. Tanzi and his wife Brigitte of France. She gave her children many rich opportunities to grow and develop their unique gifts. Her children and grandchildren Peter, David, Suzanne, Deborah, and Rachel Farynyk and Maia Carty cherished her. She was the dear sister of Eugene A. Liberati, Esq. and his wife Marie and of Armando R. Liberati and his wife Ida. She was also a loving aunt to eight nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Service to celebrate Matilda's life on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave. Cranston, followed by interment at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
