Mario Della Grotta, 40, of Wilshire Lane, Cranston, passed away Monday, January 5, 2009 at RI Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband for 13 years of Sheri A. (Richardson) Della Grotta.
Born in Providence, the devoted son of Madonna J. (Burns) Della Grotta of Johnston and the late Mario Della Grotta, he resided in Cranston for the past five years.
Mario received his B.A. in paralegal studies from Johnson & Wales University and did accounting and paralegal work for many years. He also holds a Black Belt in Karate.
Mario suffered with OCD for many years. He was the first person in the U.S. to undergo Deep Brain Stimulation for OCD. Mario worked hard to educate the public by telling his story at many conferences, magazines, journals, and Good Morning America in an effort to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
Besides his wife and mother, he was the loving father of Kaleigh Nicole and Nadia Lynne Della Grotta, both at home; dear brother of Deborah A. Wendoloski of North Providence, Ronald A. Burns of Smithfield, Angela M. DeFalco of Johnston and the late Mark A. Della Grotta; dear uncle of James, Stephanie, Madison, Justin and Nathaniel; and dear son-in-law of James and Irene (McDonnell) Richardson of Providence.
His funeral will be held Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Cranston St., Cranston at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS Thursday 4-8 p.m.
