Leon W. Pelletier, 89, of Cranston passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home Community Living Center. Leon was lovingly cared for by his family with the assistance of the staff at the Hope Alzheimer’s Center, the RI Veterans Home Community Living Center, and the Providence Veterans Hospital.
Born in Pawtucket on April 2, 1933, he was the devoted son of the late Leon P. and Rita B. (Charron) Pelletier. He would have celebrated his 90th birthday next month.
At the age of twenty years old, Leon entered the US Army and was sent overseas to Germany during the Korean War, where he proudly served his country. He was a mechanic and service advisor for many years at Criss Cadillac. He then decided to go into business for himself and opened Pelletier Auto Service. Leon was a proud member of the DAV, VFW, the American Legion, and the Irish Ceilidhe Club of RI.
Retiring in 1991, he was able to enjoy many of his favorite pastimes, which included dancing, traveling, watching TV, taking care of his granddogs, coloring, and eating ice cream. He loved to dance, and was dancing into his 80’s, anything from ballroom to square dancing, it never mattered as long as his feet were moving. His family has many happy memories of him as they traveled together on several cruises and to Disney. Leon was always the first one in line for the roller coasters and water slides. He loved to spend time with his family, and was a devoted and loving father and grandfather.
Affectionately known as Papa Leo, he was the loving father of Michelle Furlong and her husband, Daniel, and Audrey Romanelli and her husband, Christopher. He was the devoted grandfather of Patrick Furlong and his wife Jewelleen, Ryan Furlong and his wife Jennifer, Courtney Romanelli, Christopher Romanelli, Brenna Furlong, and Shannon Furlong. He was the great grandfather of Mackenzie, Madison, Alegrya, and Angelina. He was the brother of Claire Levesque and her husband, Norman, Pauline Glennon, and Rita Goguen and her husband, Joseph, and his sister-in-law, Josephine Pelletier. He was the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.He was the former husband of Barbara A. Cahir. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Pelletier, sister, Jacqueline Pelletier, and brother-in-law, Thomas Glennon.
VISITING HOURS will be held on Sunday, March 12 from 2:00-4:00 PM at NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory,1278 Park Avenue Cranston, RI 02910. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Rhode Island Veterans Home Community Living Center, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, 02809. Everyone is asked to go directly to the Rhode Island Veterans Home Community Living Center. Burial with full military honors will be immediately following the service at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to the Hope Alzheimer’s Center, 25 Brayton Ave., Cranston, 02920 or to the Rhode Island Veterans Home Community Living Center, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, 02809.
