Born to Ohan and Hermine (Manoogian) Surmeian in Attleboro, MA, he was a life long resident of Pawtucket.
He leaves his beloved wife Maria (Azarian) Surmeian. They were married on January 20, 1957 at Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church. His four devoted children, Rosanne Hamblin and husband John, John Surmeian and wife Irene, Lisa Surmeian Ohanian and husband Tom, and James Surmeian and wife Jennifer. His five loving grandchildren, James, Christopher, Nathan, Cameron and Eliz. His brother Steve Menatian of Greenville. He was also the brother of the late Jake "Hagop", Edward, and baby Vahe Surmeian.
Leo graduated from Pawtucket East High School. He joined the Merchant Marines at eighteen just before his high school graduation ceremony. Leo loved his Merchant Marine career and sailed many round-the-world trips most notably with The Sailors Union of the Pacific. He sailed from the ports of NYC and San Francisco. He served on Merchant Marine ships during World War II and was an Army Veteran of the Korean War serving in Germany. Leo enjoyed Scarborough Beach, the ocean, fresh and salt water fishing, camping and reading.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, followed by a Funeral Service at 12 noon in Sts. Sahag & Mesrob Church, 70 Jefferson St., Providence. VISITING HOURS SATURDAY MORNING 9 -11a.m.
