JUSTIN S. MONAGHAN, P.E., 35 of Smithfield, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at home. He was the dedicated son of George F. Monaghan, Jr., P.E. of Narragansett and Mary Della (Duggins) Cassidy of Smithfield, the loving stepson of Donna M. Monaghan and Christopher Cassidy, the stepbrother of Stephanie Hoogasian of Jamestown and Geoffrey Hoogasian and his wife Doreen of North Kingstown.
He is the survived by his maternal grandmother Mary (Robertson) Hebner of Smithfield, his aunts Phyllis Hanna, Ruth Marshall and Beatrice Simonds; and uncle to Hanna and Nathan Hoogasian. Justin is survived by his girlfriend Leanne and numerous cousins. He was pre-deceased by his grandparents George and Yvonne Monaghan and Delbert Duggins. Justin graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1996 and completed two years of graduate studies. Justin was a member of the Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi honor societies. He authored and co-authored a number of technical papers and was a contributor to the 1999 RIDOT research publication on mechanically stabilized embankment systems. Justin was employed by GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. since May of 1998 as a practicing geotechnical engineer and most recently as a Project Manager. Justin was a member of The National Society of Professional Engineers and was selected as the RI Chapter's Young Engineer of the Year for 2007. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, serving as the RI Section's President in 2007-2008. He was a member of the Providence Engineering Society; the Geo Institute; and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials. Most recently, Justin served on the NCEES civil engineering examination committee; as a guest lecturer for the URI senior civil engineering capstone course; and as a participant in the URI mock interviews for the civil engineering graduating class. Justin, loved the outdoors, was an avid sailor, hiker, surfer and snowboarder. He will be remembered by all those who loved him and the many lives he touched as being a kind, loyal, and faithful person, always there with a helping hand. We will miss, but always remember, his beautiful and radiant smile and his beautiful blue eyes. His funeral will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Nardolillo Funeral Home-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt.1A) Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St., Narragansett at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
