Joseph A. Mignano, Sr., 63, of Beacon Dr., North Kingstown, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 27, 2008 at Kent Memorial Hospital, Warwick after being stricken at home. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Nabb) Mignano. He was born in Providence a son of Joseph and Mary ( Palmieri ) Mignano of North Kingstown and he had resided in North Kingstown for the past 13 years, previously residing in Cranston. Mr. Mignano graduated from Cranston High School West in 1963 and attended Providence College, Roger Williams College and U.R.I. He was sworn in the Cranston Police Department July 21, 1969. During his 30 years of service with the department his duties included assignment to the Tactical Unit working undercover assignments in Drug and Organized Crime investigations, a special liaison to the R.I. Attorney General's office to assist in prosecution of felony cases, assigned to Juvenile Division duties included the day to day operation of Family Court prosecution, assigned Inspector of Prosecution Division duties included the day to day operation of District Court prosecution of adult offenders, assigned Detective Division and lastly assigned Narcotics Division working undercover investigating illegal drug trafficking. In 1990, he became the Department armorer and firearms instructor. Over the years, he received numerous commendations and citations including but not limited to the Medal of Valor for his actions during a shootout in Cranston and was also recognized by The Federal Law Enforcement Officer's Association, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Italian American Police Officers Association for the same incident. Mr. Mignano's community activates included coaching C.L.C.F. youth football and youth basketball and G.A.L.S. ( a league for women's youth basketball.) He also coached Cranston Western Little League Baseball and was president of the league, coached Cranston Babe Ruth Baseball for many years helping to organize the Babe Ruth World Series in Cranston. He was also involved in the Cranston School system and served as president on the parents-teachers groups at Western Hills Junior High School and Cranston High School West. He was a former member of the Cranston School Committee. Presently, Joe is the General Manager of the Bonnet Shores Beach Club in Narragansett and previously served as the club president . Beside his wife and parents he is survived by his loving children, Joseph A. Mignano Jr. of No. Kingstown, Michaela E. Mignano and her fiancAC. Chad Thomas of Tiverton and Christopher Mignano of PA. He was the devoted grandfather of Isabel and Sienna Mignano and cousin of Fred Palmieri, Joe Palmieri and Linda Pinsoneault. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Joe's kind acts of generosity, friendship and his keen sense of humor will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. His funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:am at the Nardolillo Funeral Home SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd ( Rt. 1A ) Narragansett. Visiting hours, Thursday 4-8pm.
