JOSEPH E. HANNIGAN

83, of Charter St, Johnston, died peacefully Thursday, November 22, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Marie R. (Petit) Hannigan of Johnston. They were married for 62 years. He was born in Providence, the only son of Joseph E. Hannigan (Sr.) and Katherine (Hanna) Hannigan, he was a lifelong resident of Johnston. Mr. Hannigan was employed by Gilbane Building Company as a Master Mechanic for over 25 years while a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 57. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy where he played on the famous 1946 football team that traveled to New Orleans to play for the National Catholic High School championship. He served in the United States Marine Corps., as a Staff Sergeant on active duty in the Korean War as a member of Marine Fighter Squadron (VMF) 223. Mr. Hannigan was also an active member of the Smithfield Elks Lodge and the Marine Corps League (Kent County Detachment). He coached CLCF youth football for both the Johnston Panthers and Providence Steamrollers organizations for more than 15 years. He was recognized for his achievements and contributions in the area by the Town of Johnston in August of 2007. Besides his beloved wife he is survived by three sons Michael T. & Ann Marie Hannigan of Cranston, Mark E. Hannigan & El Casey of Milton MA, and Mathew J. Hannigan & Wiebke Hannigan of Eldersburg MD. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Maureen (Hannigan) Coletta of Johnston, in 1998. He also had seven grandchildren, Shaun Hannigan, Alix & Evan Coletta, Kristen & Kelsey Hannigan, and Peyton & Tatum Hannigan. Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Johnston. Interment with Military Honors will be in R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. VISITING HOURS are Monday 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Robert Bellarmine Food Closet, 1804 Atwood Avenue Johnston, R.I. 02919.
