Joseph A D’Agostino


86, of Smithfield, passed away on Tuesday, February, 2, 2021.  He was the husband of Marie C. (DiMauro) D’Agostino, they had been married for 63 years.  Born in Providence, son of the late Andrea D’Agostino and Giuseppina (Lancellotti) D’Agostino.  He lived in Johnston and Providence before moving to Smithfield in 1961.

Mr.  D’Agostino was a teacher at Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School and Central Vocational High School in Providence for 20 years before retiring in 1989.  He graduated from Rhode Island College in 1978.  He had served in the US Navy aboard USS Ticonderoga.

He was a member of St. Philip Church, Smithfield, serving on multiple committees.  He loved God, his family and friends.  He enjoyed traveling and home improvement projects.  Joseph and Marie summered at their Charlestown beach home.  He served as a volunteer in the Emergency Room at RI Hospital for several years.  During younger years, he was a Boy Scout leader, softball and basketball coach with the Smithfield Recreational department.  He was Vice-chairman of the Smithfield Republican party and served on the Smithfield School Committee and Town Council where he was instrumental in the founding of the Smithfield Ice Rink and Boys Club.

He was predeceased by his son David D’Agostino and his wife, who was also his best friend.  He leaves his family, who have made him very proud: Judith D’Agostino, Mt. Vernon, IN, Joanne Marcotte (Michael), Auburn, MA and Gina D’Agostino (Tod Dionne), Glocester, RI;  Joseph D’Agostino, N. Scituate, RI and five wonderful grandchildren, David Russell, Evansville, IN, Nadia and Vera Dionne, Glocester, RI, Victoria and Clark D’Agostino, N. Scituate, RI.  He was brother of Antonetta Zinanni, Antimo D’Agostino, Raffaella Oliver, Carmella Calvitto, Andrea D’Agostino Jr, Francesca DiBenedetto, Anna Perfetto, Maria Faccenda.


Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects  on Monday morning from 10 am to 11 am in St. Philip’s Church, Greenville, followed by a Mass of Chrisitan Burial at 11 am.
