92 of Cranston, Rhode Island passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
Jose was the beloved husband of Maria (Coelho) Bernardo to whom he was happily married for 62 years.
Besides his wife, Jose was the devoted father of Clara Costa and her husband Rui Costa and Mary Brooks and her late husband William Brooks. He was also the loving grandfather of Katie Costa. He leaves behind one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
He was the son of Manuel Bernardo and Ana (Rita) Bernardo and was preceded by his sister Clara DaFonseca and survived by his sister Deolinda DaFonseca.
Born in Prados, Portugal, Jose immigrated to Canada in his early twenties and then to the United States. He was a carpenter by trade and was known for his incredible work ethic. He was always ready to help family and friends with home improvement projects and in his later years for mowing neighbors’ lawns, shoveling their snow and sharing tomatoes from his beautiful garden. In his free time Jose loved gardening, doggy-sitting his late grand-pup, Buddie and going for walks. He also loved watching soccer, the Boston Red Sox, the Bruins and especially the New England Patriots.
His biggest passion was spending time with his granddaughter, Katie. He cheered on at her softball games from the age of four and even constructed a mini golf course for her in his backyard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 10:00am in St. Matthew Church, 15 Frances Avenue, Cranston, RI. BURIAL WILL BE PRIVATE. VISITING HOURS will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 4:00-8:00pm in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, RI.
