96, of Col. John Gardner Rd, Narragansett, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Roberts Health Centre in North Kingstown. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary N. (Smith) Sornberger. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Whittaker) Sornberger.
Mr. Sornberger was an optician and owner of East Side Optical Shop in Providence for 36 years before retiring. He was a WW-II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Elks. At the age of 95, he was still volunteering at South County Hospital and had been a volunteer at The Store House at The First Church of God in Wakefield and Thundermist Health Center in South Kingstown. He was also an avid bridge player.
He was the devoted father of John T. "Jack" Sornberger, Jr. and his wife Mary of Hampton, VA, Noeline Thomson-Bee and her husband Richard of North Kingstown, William R. Sornberger and his wife Ann Marie of South Kingstown, Karen A. Patriarca of Sarasota, FL, Kristin A. Sornberger of North Kingstown and Maureen P. Sornberger of Narragansett; loving grandfather of Ryan Sornberger and his fiancAC.e Joanna, Tabitha Lewis and her husband Michael and the late Erin Sornberger; loving great-grandfather of Quinn, Dixie and Walker Lewis; and dear brother of the late George Sornberger.
Funeral from the Nardolillo Funeral Home & Crematory-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt. 1A) Narragansett on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Rd, Narragansett at 11:00 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. VISITING HOURS are THURSDAY MORNING from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
