Died peacefully on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Husband of Eileen (Corbi) Moran. Born August 31, 1930 in Somerville, MA the only child of the late Joseph L. and Anne (Paul) Moran. In his youth he was a boy scout, life guard and camp counselor, played football at St. Clement's High School, Somerville, MA from which he graduated.
John was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He entered the service in 1951 as a private and was discharged in 1953 as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Infantry. John was a graduate of Boston College, Class of 1955 with a degree in Sociology and received his Masters degree in Social Work in 1958. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Rotary, and the US Jaycees.
His 35 years career in Corrections began in 1955 in the administration of Juvenile and Adult Correctional Institutions in Massachusetts and Vermont. John was the Director of Corrections in Rhode Island from 1978 to 1990. He was a lifelong member of the American Correctional Association, served in elective office and as editor of the professional publication. He served over 25 years as a state level Director of Juvenile and Adult Corrections and Community Services in the states of Delaware, Arizona and upon his arrival in Rhode Island in 1978. He was the recipient of the E. R. Cass Award a national award for outstanding contribution to Corrections over his career.
Besides his wife, he is survived by six sons, John, Michael, Mark, Kevin, and Brendan all of Arizona, and Thomas of Nebraska and one daughter Mary Jo Cully of Arizona and his former wife and mother of his children Mary J. (Doherty) Moran of Arizona and twelve grandchildren.
John moved to Narragansett in 1985 and enjoyed the beach, bird watching, and appreciating the beautiful view out his windows. He enjoyed traveling and crusing with his wife. He loved his family, Rhode Island, his Dept. of Corrections staff, and his life in retirement. John was one man who made a difference in many lives.
His VISITING HOURS will be held on Friday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Nardolillo Funeral Home, SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road, (Rt.1A) Narragansett. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Welcome House, 8 North Road, Peace Dale, RI 02879.
