John F. Fontes, Sr. 83, of Birchwood Drive, Cranston and Royal Palm Beach, FL died Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Marie (D'Andrea) Fontes. Born in Providence he was a son of the late John R. and Maria S. (Santos) Fontes. Mr. Fontes was an orderly and Certified Nurse's Assistant at Rhode Island Hospital for thirty-three years. He also was employed by A&P Supermarkets as a Produce Manager in Rhode Island and Connecticut for twenty-eight years. He spent his winters in Florida working as a CNA at Palms West Hospital, Royal Palm Beach, FL until his illness in 2007. Mr. Fontes was devoted to caring for the elderly and the sick. He was a US Navy veteran serving during WW II. Mr. Fontes was a communicant of St. Rocco's Church and a member of both the Holy Name Society and the Legion of Mary. Mr. Fontes attended St. Rita's Church in Wellington, FL and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Forever Young Club and the Young at Heart Club all in Florida. He was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He is survived by his children; Mary Ann Mazzone of Saunderstown, John F. Fontes Jr., David N. Fontes and his wife Patricia all of Cranston and Stephen P. Fontes and his wife Stephanie of Portsmouth. Mr. Fontes was the grandfather of seven and the great-grandfather of three. He was the brother of the late Joseph R. Fontes, Rose Arruda, Helen Fontes, Charles Fontes and Mary Grace. Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Rocco's Church, Atwood Avenue, Johnston. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston.
