John J. Barone 87, of Cranston passed away Saturday October 3, 2009. He was the beloved husband of the late Gilda (Carroccia) Barone. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Giuseppe and Antoinetta (Palmieri) Barone. Mr. Barone was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a railway postal clerk, until its discontinuation in 1969 continuing his career at Turnkey in Providence, until his retirement in 1980. He was invited in 2009 to a ceremony for railway postal clerks at the Smithsonian Postal Museum in Washington, DC and sent personal artifacts for inclusion in the museum. As a young boy he dreamed of being an aviator and in 1937 wrote to Eddie Rickenbacker, the WW I flying ace and received a reply letter outlining the qualifications of a pilot. As a young man, he joined the National Guard, later attending Army Air Corps preflight school in Texas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, fought in the Battle of the Bulge during WW II in Germany where he was decorated for his service. He was an avid reader, artist, gardener, and enjoyed cooking and making homemade wine. He is survived by his loving daughter, Marsha Palmer of Cranston, his sister Emma Neri and many nieces and nephews. John was also the brother of the late Mary Barone and Rose Rubino. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 am from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME 1278 Park Ave. Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Ave. Cranston. Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS: Tuesday 4-8 pm.
