HERBERT V. NICHOLAS, JR

74, educator and coach, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at The Miriam Hospital. He was the husband of Ellen M. (Ledoux) Nicholas. They were married for 47 years. A lifelong resident of Cranston, he was a son of the late Herbert V. and Irene V. (Bagley) Nicholas, Sr. A graduate of Cranston East High School and Providence College, he excelled in athletics and was captain of the baseball team. After graduation he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and played in their minor league system. He taught in the Cranston School Department at Park View Junior High School and coached the baseball team at Cranston East leading the team to the state championship in 1979. In 2006 he was inducted into the Cranston Athletic Hall of Fame. After retiring from teaching in Cranston, he joined the faculty of Johnson & Wales University as an instructor in the English Language Institute. He was an avid golfer, loved fishing, and had traveled to many international destinations. He was the beloved father of four daughters: Amy J. Nicholas and Rodney Proulx of Florida, Alison N. Izzi and her husband Stephen of Cranston, Martha N. DiPrete and her husband Ronald of New York, Julie I. Shannon and her husband Paul of North Attleboro, MA. He was the cherished grandfather of six: Erica J. Beauregard, Nicholas S. Izzi, Avery E. Izzi, Paul F. Shannon III, William H. Shannon and Mia J. DiPrete. Step-grandfather of Ellen D. and Caroline D. Shannon. He also leaves his brother Barry J. Nicholas of South Carolina, and two sisters Nancy McGowen of Nebraska and Linda Hanley of West Warwick. Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Friday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston.
