He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and attended Providence College and later CCRI. During WW-II, after graduating from the Naval Pilot Training Program, his primary duty was that of a scout observer. He flew various catapult aircraft launched from battleships and cruisers. He was a first pilot with PANAM. He joined the RIANG in 1951 and was named Commander of the 143rd Special Operations Group at Quonset Point in 1971 before retiring in 1981. A Command Pilot with over 8,000 flying hours to his credit, he received, among many awards, The Legion of Merit. He was a member of many military organizations including Past President of the Federal Executive Council and the Armed Forces Civilian Council. He was also a member of the Order of the Sons of Italy .
Besides his wife, he was the devoted father of Janice E. Montecalvo of East Greenwich, Loraine M. Montecalvo of South Kingstown and Joseph J. Montecalvo and his wife Barbara of North Kingstown; loving grandfather of Joseph J.H. Montecalvo and Devon C.H. Montecalvo; dear brother of Ralph Montecalvo and his wife Claire of Johnston; and loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. from the Nardolillo Funeral Home-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt. 1A), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernard's Church, 275 Tower Hill Rd., North Kingstown at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery , Exeter . VISITING HOURS TUESDAY 3-7 p.m.
