GINO S. SACCOCCIO, 95, formerly of Azalea Court, Cranston, passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 at RI Veteran's Home in Bristol. He was the beloved husband for 70 years of Marie E. (Manera) Saccoccio.
Born in Itri, Italy, the son of the late Domenico and Lucy (Stamengia) Saccoccio, he came to the U.S. in 1914 settling in Cranston.
Gino was the owner and operator of Abilene Oil Service, Inc. in Cranston since 1938, before retiring in 2002. He was a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Army during WW-II with the 7th Armor Division, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of Cranston Knights of Columbus; St. Mary's Feast Society; and past member of City Hall Athletic Club. An avid golfer, he was a founder and charter member of the Alpine Country Club. His nurturing spirit gave us all love and respect of life through his joy of gardening and cooking.
Besides his wife, he was the devoted father of Dyan M. Saccoccio of Glocester, Gene A. Saccoccio of Cranston and Paul J. Saccoccio and his wife Eva of Scituate; loving grandfather of 7; loving great-grandfather of 4; and dear brother of Peter Saccoccio and Frank Saccoccio, both of Johnston, Salvatore Saccoccio and Anna Carnavale, both of Cranston, the late Alice DeSimone, Josephine Cataldi, Angie Grilli and Anthony Saccoccio.
His funeral will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 1525 Cranston St. Cranston at 11:00 a.m.
Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
