GERTRUDE E. (SMITH) HOOGASIAN

87, of Narragansett, passed away on Thursday August 11, 2011 at RI Hospital in Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Sable Hoogasian. Gertrude was born in Fall River, MA a daughter of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Burns) Smith. Mrs. Hoogasian was an elementary school teacher in Central Falls and in Pawtucket. She was a 1945 graduate of the Rhode Island College of Education (R.I.C.E.) Gert was an award winning duck pin bowler and enjoyed water aerobics in her later years. She was active in the Pawtucket PTA, American Heart Association, March of Dimes, Sacred Heart Guild, Bonnet Shores Beach Club and North Kingstown Garden Club. Gertrude and Sable, (an owner of the former Hoogasian Dairy, a family-run business based in Pawtucket), kept a warm and welcoming home for their family and friends. Gert's kind and humble spirit, as well as her intelligence, wit and friendly manner won her admirers and friends young and old. She is survived by her loving children, Stephen Hoogasian and his wife Cynthia, of Saunderstown, Nancy Hoogasian of Narragansett, Cheryl Hoogasian of Narragansett and Michael Hoogasian and his wife Elizabeth, of New Mexico. She was also the cherished grandmother of 8, great grandmother of 4 and sister of Ellen Simmerer of Cranston, Elizabeth Lanoue of CA, and Barbara Mitchell of Central Falls. Gert was also the sister of the late James and Lois Smith. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9 am from the Nardolillo Funeral Home & Crematory SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Route 1A) Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Veronica's Chapel, Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett. Her burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Pawtucket.
