89, of Pocono Road, Narragansett, passed away at home among family, friends, and caregivers on Monday, December 13, 2010. He was the beloved husband for 63 years of Loretta "Joan" (McDermott) McKiernan. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William F. and Maude (Tyas) McKiernan.
Besides his wife, he was the devoted father of George F. McKiernan, Jr. and his wife Suzanne of Narragansett and Gary E. McKiernan and his wife Donna of East Greenwich. He was the biggest fan of his loving grandchildren Kevin McKiernan, Mark McKiernan, and Kelly McKiernan; he was the loving great-grandfather of Gavyn Dernberger and Charlotte McKiernan; and dear brother of Eugene Migneault of Boise, ID and the late William McKiernan and Alfred McKiernan. He also leaves his "best boy" Timone.
Mr. McKiernan was owner and President of the former Atlantic Coal & Oil Company in Providence for over 60 years. He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran of WW-II having served on the USS Bailey at Pearl Harbor and the Aleutian Islands where he was wounded twice. Mr. McKiernan was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a life member of the Providence/Cranston Elks Lodge, and a member of the Lions Club.
Poppy, as he was known to his family, friends and neighbors was a staunch supporter of any and all activities his grandchildren were involved in. He was a devoted fixture at all kinds of sporting events. A kind and gentle man, he will be missed by many whose life he touched.
His funeral will be held Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the Nardolillo Funeral Home and Crematory, SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road (Rte. 1A), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Road, Narragansett at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will be at RI Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.
