ESTHER (MELIKIAN) KALOUSTIAN, 100, of Norwood Ave. Cranston, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Haven Health Center in Coventry. She was the beloved wife of the late Samuel Kaloustian.
Born in Kharpert, Armenia, she was the daughter of the late Krikor and Varter Melikian.
Esther was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. In order to survive the Armenian Genocide, she was placed in the care of the American Missionaries' orphanage. In 1922 the orphanage was relocated to Athens, Greece, where Esther attended the newly formed Armenian School and Church. She met and married her late husband of 60 years in 1933. In 1959 the family emigrated to MontrAC.al, Canada, and after four years they moved to the U.S. settling in Providence, before moving to Cranston in 1975. Esther and her husband Samuel were founding members of First Armenian Protestant Church in Montreal, and were active members of Armenian Euphrates Evangelical Church in Providence.
She is survived by 3 children, Arpiar Kaloustian and his wife Norma of Cranston, Ara Kaloustian and his wife Sue of San Diego, CA, and Arpie Shiragian and her husband Ara of East Greenwich; one sister, Araxie Assadourian of Montreal; 3 grandchildren, Grace Shiragian of VA, Joy Shiragian of CA, and Elaine Larsen of Canada; 4 great-grandchildren, Corey and Jered Larsen, and Alex and Charlotte Beckner; two nieces, Armenouhi and Arpy Assadourian; and one nephew, Sarkis Assadourian, who became the first Armenian Member of Parliament in Canada.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Armenian Euphrates Evangelical Church, followed by interment in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
