Edward R Pannone, Sr.,
95, of
Rosemont Avenue
in
Johnston
, passed away on July 24, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of 73 years to Eleanor Tedesco Pannone. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Frank and Angelina D’Agnillo Pannone.
Edward had a lifelong love for music. In his youth he played electric guitar and was in a small group that would play parties, often for young men going off to fight in World War II. In 1945, he enlisted and became a member of the Civil Air Patrol before joining the Navy, where he served as ship’s tailor on the Destroyer Escorts USS Borum (
DE-790
), and USS Otter
(
DE-210
).
When the war was over, he returned to his home in the Silver Lake section of Providence, where he worked as a tailor with his father at Pannone’s Tailor Shop. He also worked delivering laundry at Annex Laundry with his Uncle Nick Pullano. Edward remained a self employed tailor on Pocasset Avenue in Silver Lake until his retirement in 1991.
In 1946 he met and eventually married Eleanor Tedesco. They settled down in a neighborhood in Providence where everyone had a garden and your neighbors were your friends. Practically every Sunday after church, parishioners of St. Anthony’s would go to his home to socialize and share some fine food, including homemade sausage and his prized tomatoes, which he proudly grew from seed each year. And of course, there was always plenty of burgundy and Chablis wine, as well as the occasional martini.
Edward’s biggest treasure was his family. With them he shared his love for music, shot countless hours of bumper pool,
and played and taught golf. He also enjoyed playing bocce with his children and grandchildren, a game he used to play with his parents on their trips to
Goddard
Park
.
He was at his happiest at home surrounded by family and, when he was, you could be certain that a chorus (or two) of “Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here” was about to begin.
Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his loving children: Sandra Cerel, and her husband Lon of Johnston, Janice Batsford of Johnston and Edward R Pannone Jr. and his wife Joanne of Johnston; he was the cherished grandfather of Peter Boyer, Michal Salonia, Nicole Batsford, Edward Pannone III and Anthony Pannone, and great grandfather of Stephen Boyer. Edward was the brother of the late Louis Pannone, Richard Pannone and Alma Ripa.
