Edward G. Hopkins, Sr., 95, of Treasure Rd, Narragansett, and formerly of Patience Ct, Warwick, passed away on July 22, 2011. He was the husband of the late Kathryn (Breen) Hopkins. The couple had been married for 62 years when Kay passed away in 2005.
Born in Pittston, PA in 1916, a son of the late Richard and Margaret (Golden) Hopkins, he had lived in Warwick and summered in Bonnet Shores for 23 years, before moving to Bonnet full time in 1978. He was a devoted communicant of St. Timothy Church while living in Warwick, and then St. Thomas More Church/St. Veronica Chapel in Narragansett.
Mr. Hopkins graduated from St. Thomas College in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science. He taught high school english and science briefly and then went to work for the General Electric Company. He was employed by GE as a manager for 42 years. First in Bridgeport and Norfolk, CT, and then in Providence in the plant on Hathaway Street from 1955 until he retired in 1982.
He is survived by his children Bryan Hopkins and his wife Lorene of Honolulu, Richard Hopkins and his wife Norma of North Kingstown, Ellen Heiser and her husband Jeffrey of Warwick, Edward Hopkins, Jr. of Warwick, and Gerard Hopkins of Wakefield; beloved granddaughters Kimberly Gonzalez and her husband David of Los Angeles, Stephanie Heiser of Cambridge, Allison Heiser of Warwick, and Julia Hopkins of Warwick; cherished great granddaughter Maya Gonzalez; daughter-in-law Mary McCarthy and her husband Vincent Massa of Ventura, CA; dear friend of the family Gayle Davis and her husband Paul of Narragansett; sister-in-law Joan Facella of Boxford, MA; nephew James Heffers and his wife Nancy of Dallas, PA; nieces Margaret Heffers of Plains, PA, Margaret Sheehy and her husband Joseph of Naugatuck, CT, Sandra Galletti of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and many other nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by siblings Rosemary Heffers and James Hopkins and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Hopkins.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial at St. Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Rd, Narragansett, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich. VISITING HOURS are respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ed's memory to St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St, Narragansett, RI 02882 would be appreciated.
