Dr. Mattia Eugene "Gene" Tudino

May 25, 1932 — June 30, 2021

Dr. Mattia Eugene "Gene" Tudino

passed away June 30, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born to Matty and Carmela Tudino in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from LaSalle High School, and then Providence College in 1953, with a degree in biology, before embarking on a medical education overseas. He studied medicine in Italy at the University of Bologna where he graduated, but more importantly he met the love of his life the former Rita Gamberini. They married eighteen months after meeting, also in Bologna, Italy on July 25, 1959.

After returning to the United States with his bride, and 6-week old infant son, Gene settled in Providence, Rhode Island where he completed his medical internship. But in 1962 a single phone call would change his life. His eventual mentor at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, Dr. Harry Robinson, inquired if the young doctor would be interested in pursuing a career in dermatology in Baltimore, and when he said yes, a new chapter of his life began in earnest.

Dr. Gene Tudino’s practice began first as a junior partner with Dr. Eugene Bereston, but by 1972 he made the decision to go out on his own. For the next 43 years, Dr. Tudino served his patients in the Baltimore area, sometimes spanning 2 or 3 generations. In addition to his practice, Gene found time to teach clinical dermatology to residents at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, first as an assistant professor, then as a full clinical professor. He often said it was the residents who kept him sharp and his many students would agree it was a challenge to be in his class. His professional commitments also included volunteering once a week at the Veterans Hospital at Fort Howard and he often remarked it was some of the most satisfying work he’d do.

In his spare time, Gene Tudino loved to play ice hockey and would often engage in pick-up hockey games well into his 40’s; he also enjoyed playing golf with his family and loved the outdoors. He and Rita traveled extensively, often to see relatives in Italy, but also to the Caribbean and even Alaska; the above picture was from that trip. He loved watching collegiate and professional sports, was a Baltimore Colt season ticket holder, and took his son Mark to many Colt football games. For a time, he was even an adjunct team physician to the Colts and brought home quite a few autographs from his famous patients.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rita, his son Mark of Pompano Beach, Florida, and by his sister, Tullia Hydinger of York, Pennsylvania, and by his brother and sister-in-law, Bettyann and Michael Tudino of Wakefield, Rhode Island and their families.
