Dr. Anna R. ( McManus )Mullaney, 95, retired professor from Rhode Island College, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at South Bay Manor, Wakefield. Born in Providence she was a life long resident of North Providence and Bonnet Shores, Narragansett. Anna was the wife of the late Raymond J. Mullaney, formally of Petroleum Heat and Power Co. Dr. Mullaney was a pioneer in the field of education for people with intellectual disabilities. She was a professor of psychology and special education at Rhode Island College until 1980, and then served as an administrator at Vocational Resources, Inc. in Providence. She was a fellow of the American Association of Mental Retardation and throughout her career served as a consultant and demonstration teacher in programs for students with learning disabilities. She initiated the first primary school classroom for children with intellectual disabilities in the State of RI, and her doctoral research focused on the inclusion of these children into the general classroom. She served as Chairperson of the School Psychology Program at Rhode Island College and was a student advisor, a member of the graduate admissions committee, and a supervisor of student teachers and graduate interns in psychology. She also served on the Board of Directors for both the RI Association for Children with Learning Disabilities and the RI Federation of Teachers. She was also active in community activities as well, serving on the boards of RI Catholic Charities and the United Way of Southeastern New England. In retirement, she was a former president of the Bonnet Shores Beach Club and resided in Narragansett. She was a graduate of Rhode Island College ( B.Ed. and M.Ed.) and Boston University (Ed.D.). Throughout her career, she mentored many fledgling teachers and psychologists who went on to become special education teachers, school psychologists, and advocates for the rights of people with disabilities. She leaves behind her daughter, Mary Frangiosa and her husband Angelo and grandson Angelo Ray Frangiosa of Norwood, MA, a granddaughter, Dr. Joanne Wilkinson and her husband Dr. Duncan Vinson and a great granddaughter, Megan Vinson all of Winchester, MA and Bonnet Shores. She was the mother of the late Anne M. Wilkinson. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10am from the Nardolillo Funeral Home SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. ( Rt 1A ), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett at 11am. VISITING HOURS 1 hour prior to mass. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to RIC Alumni Association, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Prov., RI 02908
