76, of East Greenwich RI. Passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023. Beloved husband of Lynda Douglass Baker; father of Wade Baker; grandfather of Reese Baker; brother of James Baker, and the late Bruce Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah Frances French and William Freeman Baker.
Don graduated from Providence Country Day school, Lafayette college in Easton PA in 1968. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at college. It was the Vietnam era, Don joined the army reserve, 455 General Hospital, Warwick, RI and trained as a medical lab technologist at Fort Bliss and Fort Sam, Houston in Texas 1968–69.
Don and Lynda were married in 1969 in New Paltz, New York. They have resided in Rhode Island ever since. They bought a summer cottage on Narragansett Bay, which they have worked hard on turning into a great house! Don worked as assistant sales manager from 1969-70 at Teknor Apex in Pawtucket, RI. Then from 1970–75 at SmithKline laboratories, Waltham MA. as senior sales rep. He worked for MetPath Laboratories, Chestnut Hill, MA, 1975-77 as Director of operations and sales and then for New England medical laboratories in Holliston, MA 1977–82 as assistant sales manager. Then Don took a job at Damon clinical laboratories in Boston, MA. where he was national sales trainer, then manager, then Director of sales and manager of business development. For the last 28 years Don has been employed as Vice President of sales for Clinical Science Laboratory in Mansfield MA. and commuted from his home on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island six days a week until he passed away on Sunday. He was a hard worker, a great salesman, very outgoing and he enjoyed socializing, telling stories, and just being around other people. When Don started work for clinical science lab the lab was struggling to stay in business and really needed the sales. Don came to the rescue, he was tenacious, and worked hard and brought in the business and played a large part in making the laboratory the very successful business it is today!
At 76 years old, he still enjoyed traveling to trade shows around the country and talking to people. They say he was a bit of a star, very friendly, easy to talk to and everyone at the shows wanted to come and talk to him. He loved to tell stories and jokes. In his younger days, he spent a lot of time fixing his cars and working on his boats. He loved sailing on Narragansett Bay in their 34 foot hunter sailboat With friends. Just the last in a long line of boats, he and Lynda had restored. He enjoyed reading, newspapers and books and doing the puzzles. He enjoyed getting up every morning and going to work and solving the problems and meeting the challenges! Probably most of all Don loved spending time with family and friends, and was very proud of his son Wade and his granddaughter Reese. Don will be sadly missed.
