Demetra A. Coclin

Demetra A. (Pliakas) Coclin, 94 of Cranston passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2023, with her family by her side. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Kalliope (Zakas) Pliakas. She was the beloved wife of the late Constantine “Deno” Coclin. Demetra was the loving mother of George Coclin and his wife Maria, Andrew Coclin, and Elaine Coclin. She was a devoted grandmother to Constantine and Anastasia Coclin. She was the beloved sister of George Pliakas and his wife Georgia, John Pliakas and his wife Marsha, and the late Theodora Pliakas. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

Growing up civic-minded, she sold War Bonds as a teenager to help the war effort. Upon completing high school, she went on to attend URI. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree and started her career as a social worker then went on to become a teacher. She primarily taught kindergarten, first and second grade. She spent time keeping up her teaching certifications after her children went to school. Her passion for teaching helped her to develop a game to help children learn to read at an early age, with the use of phonics. She was very active in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, she was a member of the Daughters of Penelope, and a member of the Philoptochos Society, and participated in the Cranston Garden Club, but her primary focus was always her family including the grandchildren of whom she was so proud. In later years, she enjoyed visiting Florida and made yearly trips to Disney with Andy and Elaine.

Her funeral will be held Friday, February 3, 2023, at 10:00 am in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 175 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston. VISITING HOURS will be held just prior to the funeral from 9:00 – 10:00 am at the church. Burial in North Burial Ground will be immediately following. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Endowment Fund, 175 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, 02920.
