Daniel J. Casey

It is with deep sadness - and profound gratitude for a life well lived - that we share the news of the unexpected passing on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, of Daniel J. Casey, 49, of Cranston, RI. 

Born in Providence, Daniel was the devoted and loving son of John J. Casey of Wakefield and Jane E. (Etchells) Walker of Johnston. He is survived by sister, Donna J. Dunsford, her husband, Ethan, and their daughter Liliana, of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his aunt, Elaine M. Godinho, uncle, James R. Etchells and his wife, Katharine McDuffie, and several cousins.

Dan was a graduate of Cranston West High School and Arizona State University, and he earned a Master's degree in counseling. He taught and served as guidance counselor and wrestling coach at Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen, AZ. Returning to his roots, he was director of Guidance and Counseling for Scituate Middle and High Schools and was head coach of the Scituate wrestling team, which he began and proudly led to success.

Dan was a compassionate, kind, generous man with a quick wit and low key style. He made others, especially his students, counselees and the young athletes he mentored, feel understood and important. He was an athlete himself and loved following his teams, especially Providence College basketball. Always the adventurer, Dan lived to travel and took some epic vacations, visiting more than thirty countries. He loved to make new friends wherever he went; once you became his friend, you were a friend for life. 

He is sorely missed by his family, friends, students and colleagues. His impact on others was profound. He leaves a legacy that will forever be held dear by all who knew him.

Visiting hours will be on Friday, May 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 237 Garden Hill Drive, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dan Casey Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Scituate High School, 94 Trimtown Road North, Scituate, RI 02857.
