85, of Johnston, passed away at home on Thursday, July 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Bruno was the beloved husband of the late Francesca (DeSimone) Porreca and the son of the late Onofrio and Pasqualina (Silvestri) Porreca. He was born in Cervinara, in the Province of Avellino, Italy.
Besides his wife Francesca, he was the cherished father of Pasqualina Mambro of North Providence, Bruno Porreca of Cranston, Fiore Porreca and his wife Lynn, Italia Porreca, and Antonio Porreca, all of Johnston, and the late Concetta Porreca-Pimental; loving grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 9. He was the brother of the late Carmine, Agostino, Luigi, and Fioravante Porreca, Rita Iannuccillo, Concetta Zugg, Maria Zugg, Flora DeLuca, Lucia L’Europa, and Italia Fiano.
Bruno came to the United States at the age of fifteen and later graduated from Arthur Angelo’s School of Cosmetology. Ultimately, he transitioned to the position of Chief Inspector at the Providence Water Supply Board until his retirement. Bruno treasured his time with his extended family and friends. He was active in many social memberships including serving as President of the Verdi Club (Federal Hill) and a member of the Santa Maria di Prata (Cranston) social club. Moreover, Bruno was Captain of the Italo-American Civil Liberties Union and engaged in multiple political and social movements, including advocating for Italo-American rights. Bruno embraced his heritage and Italian roots. He was an excellent cook and an impressive gardener. The community relished the fruits of his labor, helping themselves any time to peaches, figs, tomatoes, eggplants, and whatever was in season. He was an avid Bocce Ball player, winning many championships, and enjoyed watching the horse races. His greatest passion was frequently traveling back to his “paese” in Italy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, July 31st, at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Ghost Church, Providence. His graveside burial will be held in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting Hours: Tuesday 4:00-8:00 p.m. in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston.
