BERNARD "BERNIE" SINGLETON

BERNARD "BERNIE" SINGLETON, 71, of South Kingstown, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at home. He was the husband of Lesley A. (Nicastro) Singleton. They were married for nineteen years. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Hubert and Lillian (Denomey) Singleton.

Mr. Singleton started his career as a classroom teacher and served as a union official for the National Education Association of Rhode Island for over 20 years. Bernard was appointed Director of Labor in 1988 by Governor Edward DiPrete. In 1994 he was hired as the Director of Human Resources at Lincoln Park, retiring in 2006. He graduated from Rhode Island College and received Master Degrees in Economics and Public Administration from University of Illinois and University of Rhode Island respectively.

Mr. Singleton was involved in a myriad of professional and community groups, including, past president of the Industrial Relations and Research Association, Chairman Emeritus of South County Community Action. Served on the executive board of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association, lifetime member of the NEA Retired Teachers Association, the Labor History Society, South Kingstown Democratic Town Committee, former South Kingstown Town Sergeant, Rhode Island Zoological Society, and the Keel Club of the United Way.

Bernard was a US Navy veteran serving four years. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi parish of Wakefield.

Besides his wife he is survived by his children Leah Singleton, stepson Michael V. Giordano, both of Wakefield, and adopted daughter Christine Singleton. He was the brother of Maureen Singleton of Cranston.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield, and may call at the Nardolillo Funeral Home, SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett on Sunday 3-7 p.m. Interment will be private.
