ARTHUR A. RICE, SR., 72, of Douglas Ave., North Providence passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Ann (Calise) Rice. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Clifford and Joyce (McGowan) Rice, Sr.
Mr. Rice was a salesman for H.P. Hoods, Co. for 25 years and after retiring he entered his family's business RICECO, INC., and most recently he worked for Enterprise Marketing. In his youth, Arthur attended St. Patrick's School and played CYO Baseball for Ed Garrahy and Basketball for Joe Hassett, Sr., winning the City Championship in 1950-1951 as part of the famed "Rice Twins". Arthur went on to be a three sport letterman at Mount Pleasant High School where he excelled in Baseball and Basketball, and earned a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. Arthur shared his love of sports with his sons, and coached their teams. Most recently Arthur was an invaluable assistant to the 2004 New England Champion Edgewood Eagles, earning a National Championship Berth. Arthur was a champion to all who knew him. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Arthur A. Rice, Jr. and his wife Loretta and Michael Rice and his wife Denise, all of Cranston, and Andrew Rice of Providence; his twin brother Clifford Rice, Jr. of East Greenwich, and Lee Rice of North Kingstown; and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Daniel Rice. His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Cross Church, Hartford Ave., Providence at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
