Alice F. (Carnevale) Sharkey

91, a retired secondary education school teacher from South County and Boynton, FL passed away in peace on September 23, 2020.  She is the only daughter born to Carmino & Annie (Catanzaro) Carnevale in Providence, 1929.

Following the death of her mother at age 6, she was later raised by both her father and step-mother, Alice (Reilly) Carnevale. While attending Saint Xavier Academy, she worked part time at Shepard’s Department store during WWII and met Jack (John Sharkey), her love and future husband for over 61 years.

While raising a family she returned to college and graduated from Bryant College (Summa Cum laude) in Business Education (1970), received a Masters of Education (1972), from URI, and doctoral studies at the University of Connecticut in Professional Education (1977).

While offered to work at the RI Department of Education, she chose to teach Business Education at Central High School to help the disadvantaged as she experienced herself during the Great Depression era.  At Central High School she hosted the Distributed Education Club of America (DECA) providing job training and business skills that led to full time employment upon graduation for her students.

Preceding her death is her late husband John J. Sharkey Jr. in 2015 and sons John Thomas Sharkey, and Timothy James Sharkey.

She leaves her remaining son and family, LTC (USA-Ret.) Stephen & Angela Sharkey; her grandchildren; Dr. Stephanie Sharkey and husband Chris Sita, Suzanne, Andrew, and Annalisa Sharkey; and, 2 great-granddaughters.

A special thank you to Brookdale (South Bay) nurses, CNA’s, and staff for the care provided and during COVID when you place patient care above yourself.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Visitation on Friday, October 2, 2020 from 9-10am followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Christ the King Church,  180 Old North Road, Kingston.  Burial will be private.
