79, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010 at home after a 4 year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph and Antonetta (Lonardo, Rossi) Cataldo. He leaves his wife Thelma (Picone) Cataldo and 6 daughters, Elizabeth Jaswell and husband Alan, Nancy Cataldo, Janice Cataldo and husband Vincent McCrystal, Mary Costa and husband Leonard, Christine Lamberti and husband William, and Annette Cataldo and husband Ronald Ohsberg. He was the brother of the late Jennie Martino and Theresa Cogean. He's survived by an "adopted" daughter, Donna Olson. He leaves behind his pride and joy- 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Jacqueline, Brittany, Ryan, Rachel, Molly, James, Stephen, Katherine, Caroline, Grace, Christopher and Haley. He graduated from Rhode Island College with a BS in Education and Masters in Counseling where he played basketball, soccer and track. Al was a US Navy Officer and served on the USS Irwin (DD794) and USS Brownson (DD 868). Al was the Executive Officer of the US Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center. Al was one of the first teachers at Cranston West and was also a counselor and coached basketball. In 1969, he became assistant principal/guidance director of Portsmouth High School until his retirement in 1989. Al was Chairperson of the Cranston Juvenile Hearing Board for 11 years. In 2008, RIC named the visitors' locker room in his honor and established a scholarship in his name. Al was president of St. Mary's Church CCD and Parish Council, as well as chairperson with his wife of the 24th reunion and dance. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and Italian Cultural Society. Al served as lector, Eucharistic Minister and senior acolyte. He also served as Eucharistic Minister at RI Hospital. He conducted SEARCH for Maturity at various parishes in the diocese. His funeral will be held on Monday at 9:45am from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME 1278 Park Avenue Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Cranston at 11:00am.
